The seller has options for the old registration plate. They can either transfer the plate to another vehicle they own, or they can surrender the plate. If the seller wants to keep the plate for a future vehicle, they should let us know. Otherwise, we can handle the surrender.
The buyer will either get new plates or, in some cases, may transfer plates from a vehicle they are trading or selling. We can help figure out the best approach based on your situation.
Understanding Sales Tax
Pennsylvania charges sales tax on vehicle purchases, including private sales. The standard rate is 6% of the purchase price. However, residents of Allegheny County pay 7%, and Philadelphia County residents pay 8%. The tax is based on where the buyer lives, not where the vehicle is purchased.
The purchase price on your bill of sale determines your tax. PennDOT does check these numbers, so be accurate. If the reported price seems too low for the vehicle, PennDOT may question the transaction.
Dealing with Liens
If the vehicle has a loan against it, the lienholder is listed on the title. The loan must be paid off before the title can be transferred. If the seller recently paid off their loan, they should have received a lien release letter from the bank. Bring this letter when you come in.
