Understanding PA Registration Renewal

Every vehicle registered in Pennsylvania must have a current registration. The registration period is either one year or two years depending on options you chose when you first registered. When your registration approaches expiration, PennDOT mails a renewal notice about 6 to 8 weeks before the due date.

Your registration expires at midnight on the last day of your registration month. For example, if your registration expires in March, you must renew before April 1 to avoid driving with expired registration.

Penalties for Late Renewal

Driving with expired registration in Pennsylvania is illegal. If you are pulled over with expired registration, you face:

- A traffic citation - Fines up to $500 - Potential vehicle impoundment in some cases

Additionally, your insurance company may have issues with claims if your registration was expired at the time of an accident. Renewing on time protects you from these complications.

What the Renewal Notice Contains

PennDOT mails renewal notices to the address on your vehicle record. The notice includes:

- Your vehicle information (make, model, VIN) - Registration expiration date - Renewal fee amount - Your current registration plate number

If your address has changed, update it with PennDOT. You can change your address when you renew, but it helps to have it updated beforehand so you receive important mail.

I Did Not Get a Renewal Notice

Sometimes renewal notices get lost in the mail or go to an old address. Not receiving a notice does not excuse late renewal. You are responsible for knowing when your registration expires.

If you did not receive your renewal notice, you can still renew. Bring your current registration card to our office. We can look up your vehicle record and process the renewal.

Registration Renewal Requirements

To renew your registration, you need:

Current insurance: Pennsylvania requires continuous insurance coverage. Your insurance must be active on the day of renewal. Bring your insurance card or declaration page.

No outstanding obligations: If you have unpaid parking tickets, emissions test failures, or other outstanding requirements, you may not be able to renew until those are resolved.

Valid inspection: For vehicles that require inspection, the current inspection must be valid. If your inspection expired, get it reinspected before or after renewal.

Annual vs. Biennial Registration

Pennsylvania offers two registration periods:

Annual registration: Your registration is valid for one year. The fee for passenger vehicles is $48.

Biennial registration: Your registration is valid for two years. The fee is $96 (double the annual fee). This option means one less renewal to remember.

When you renew, you can choose either option. Many people prefer biennial registration for the convenience.

Emissions Testing and Registration

Some Pennsylvania counties require emissions testing. If your vehicle is in an emissions-required county, you must pass the emissions test before or during the renewal period.

Emissions test results are valid for one year. If you recently passed an emissions test, the results are in the PennDOT system and should not delay your renewal.

If your vehicle failed emissions or is overdue for testing, complete the emissions requirement first. We can then process your registration renewal.

Changing Your Plates at Renewal

Renewal time is a good opportunity to consider plate changes:

Specialty plates: Pennsylvania offers various specialty plates for causes, organizations, and interests. You can switch to a specialty plate during renewal, though additional fees apply.

Personalized plates: Want a custom plate number? You can order personalized plates through PennDOT. The renewal period is a good time to make this change.

Replacing damaged plates: If your current plates are damaged, faded, or illegible, request replacement plates during renewal.

Registration for Other Vehicle Types

Besides passenger vehicles, we handle registration renewals for:

Motorcycles: Annual registration is $25. Requirements are similar to passenger vehicles.

Trailers: Trailer registration fees depend on weight. Small trailers are inexpensive to register.

Commercial vehicles: Fees vary based on weight class and use. Bring your current registration information and we can quote the exact amount.

Boats and ATVs: These have separate registration requirements. Visit us for details on your specific vehicle.

Multiple Vehicles

If you have multiple vehicles due for renewal around the same time, you can renew them all in one visit. Bring the renewal notices or registration cards for each vehicle along with proof of insurance for all vehicles.

After Renewal

Once you renew, apply your new registration sticker to your license plate immediately. The sticker goes in the designated spot on your rear plate, usually the upper right corner.

Keep your new registration card in the vehicle at all times. You may be asked to show it during traffic stops or inspections.

Your renewal is effective immediately. There is no waiting period or processing delay when you renew through our office.
